Unbelievable! Cannot begin to explain the sensations of elation, content, disbelief, confusion, and stunning disorientation that this show radiates, no pun intended. It's a must see, even with the long lines and wait time. And please, do stay in there as long as you can to experience the shift of time and light - I wanted to live in that space. It may possibly be this year's "The Clock" exhibit, ironically also around the same time last year.

If we reflect on the history of photography, we realize it has been widely accepted as a medium of artistic expression only for roughly twenty years. Prior to that, it was treated as a purely technical means of recording history.

In recent years, in the development of the photographic arts, various elements such as plot, color, chiaroscuro, and compositional narrative have maintained a parallel development relationship to the methods and characteristics of Western painting. It remains difficult for photography to break free from being habitually recognized as an arbitrator, but this historical misunderstanding originates from much deeper ancient and enduring philosophical issues, such as: what is reality, is it possible to record reality? Or, what is the nature of the relationship between truth and reality?

Evidently, such conclusions lean towards the interpretation of photography as merely an illusion, something that falls short of reality's reflection. The material existence of such an illusion furthermore becomes another kind or irrefutable reality. It doesn't matter if this material's features are dynamic or static, black and white or color, large or small, or realized via chemicals or binary code- whenever photography occurs, it is endowed with all the characteristics of an independent material, proving that photographs as objects themselves are identical to any previously existing object. Despite the fact that photographs appear to have originated in the process of documenting the object that is being photographed, the real documentation of this so-called objectivity has a greater attraction and a dualistic nature. It is even more unfaithful to reality, calling our physiological feelings and fundamental means of expression into question.

Photography is a deceitful and dangerous medium; and medium is method, it is significance, a ubiquitous feast of hope, or a hopelessly impassable ditch. In the end, photography is unable to either record or express reality, it rejects the authenticity of the reality that it presents, making reality even more remote and distant from us. People from East Asia are inclined toward another possible aesthetic attitude: they rarely see artistic activities as a means for understanding, or they rarely show an interest in the topic; instead, the process of achieving understanding itself and the means of expressing this understanding are seen as the ultimate essence. This essence is precisely our mental outlook on the world, and as for the reality of the outside world, that is even more of an illusion.

The universe's reality is limited and ruthless; humankind's reality is comparatively psychological and emotional, indeterminate, difficult to ponder, idealistic, and self-centered. As for a familiarity with the self, isn't being cognizant of one's own personal feelings and psychology even more perplexing and fascinating?

A term first encountered in Ptolemy's "Geographia", and more recently rehabilitated by German geographer Ferdinand von Richthofen,
chorography's
purview has always been the provision of a systematic, detailed description and analysis of a region - pushing against the rigid boundaries of geography by seeking to record more than mere topography.

In her book "Tooth for an Eye",
Deborah Luster
expands upon this concept, eloquently defining chorography as "a form of geography that describes the inherent attributes of a place. These attributes may be physical, sociological, conceptual, metaphysical or sensory".

Heavily influenced by geography throughout its brief history, the shaping of America's socio-political landscape has developed distinct cultural fault lines - ranging from the North-South ideological divide, to the "rugged individualism" credo of the West - that continue to influence social attitudes throughout each region.

And it is along these fault lines, at the crossroads of geography and human experience that our photographers' subjects lie, each inhabiting their own liminal state: between the physical and digital realms; between land and sea; between racial divisions; between loads. For it "is in these cracks, in the interstices of social structure, that [we] are most aware of [ourselves]" (La Shure, 2005).

George Beacher, b. 1920, Achnasheen, Scottish Highlands, and Patricia Beacher, née Dixon-Foster, b. 1920, Shrewsbury, England; active as artists on the South Coast of England, 1958–1965. After meeting at Nottingham University in 1955 (married 1956), the Beachers began to develop their body arrangements as a series of tableaux performed annually at various locations in the South of England. Documented in photographs, these works were bound into a number of albums, each taking its title from the town where the actions took place. Of the original seven or more albums, only one, The Abbotsbury Album, has survived intact. Geo. Beacher, who practised as an accountant, died in 2004, but since the album was discovered in 2010 there has been much speculation on their aesthetic intentions. US historian Professor Pascal Zehn was discovered to have forged similar albums and passed them off as Beacher originals. (via)

The exhibition What Matters Now? Proposals for a New Front Page will combine the crowd sourcing of images and ideas with the curatorial engagement of six experienced individuals. Each will host a table and a conversation within the space, where on corresponding walls each group will present its proposals for the contents of a 'New Front Page' in a post-9/11, globalized world. As part of the exhibition, a series of conversations between What Matters Now? table-hosts will take place. Join us to hear Stephen Mayes and Joel Meyerowitz discuss the goals and challenges of this project, as well as give insight into their decision-making processes as they try to decide what should we be looking at? "Africolor" - the exhibition - looks at the connections in photography between Africa, color, and color photography. While Africa as a subject has attracted and inspired photographers since the invention of photography, because of the obvious financial and technical issues involved – photographing Africa in the 19th century was largely a European endeavor. By the middle of the 20th century, however, photography both as a business and a means of artistic expression was beginning to flourish across the African continent. (via)

It is clear from Sidibé’s photographs that what the youth in Bamako wanted most in those days was James Brown and the freedom and existential subjectivity that linked independence to the universal youth movement of the 1960s…. These photographs are speaking to me now, not only as important aesthetic documents on the culture of the 1960s, but also as documents that both problematize the narrow meaning of nationalism extent at that time, and open the door for Pan-African and diasporic aesthetics through rock and roll.

We are humbled to have been commissioned by The Studio Museum of Harlem for their Harlem Postcards Summer 2011 project.

I Love You, Harlem 2011

Throughout the twentieth century, Harlem has been regarded as a beacon of African-American history and culture. Sites such as the Apollo Theater, Abyssinian Baptist Church, and Malcolm X Corner at 125th Street and Seventh Avenue serve as popular postcard images that represent significant places and moments in this community. Today, Harlem continues to evolve as a center of history and culture. Everyday, changes are witnessed by its residents and experienced by tourists and visitors from all over the world. Harlem Postcards, an ongoing project, invites contemporary artists of diverse backgrounds to reflect on Harlem as a site of cultural activity, political vitality, visual stimuli, artistic contemplation and creative production. Representing intimate and dynamic perspectives of Harlem, the images reflect each artist’s oeuvre with an idiosyncratic snapshot taken in, or representing, this historic locale. Each photograph has been reproduced as a limited-edition postcard available free to visitors. (via)

Asia Society Museum presents an exhibition of 227 photographs taken by famed Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei, capturing the history, culture, and atmosphere of 1980s New York from his unique perspective.

The exhibition marks the first time Ai Weiwei's New York Photographs series is being shown outside of China. (via)

Taryn Simon : A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters

A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters was produced over a four-year period (2008-11), during which Simon travelled around the world researching and recording bloodlines and their related stories. In each of the eighteen ‘chapters’ that make up the work, the external forces of territory, power, circumstance or religion collide with the internal forces of psychological and physical inheritance. The subjects documented by Simon include feuding families in Brazil, victims of genocide in Bosnia, the body double of Saddam Hussein’s son Uday, and the living dead in India. Her collection is at once cohesive and arbitrary, mapping the relationships among chance, blood, and other components of fate. (via)
